now, is there a value to kicking the can down the road in avoiding the fiscal cliff? yes. but if they go over the cliff and then fix it in the next week with another stopgap, is there any real harm? who knows. if that make it is easier for republicans to vote for it, is it a disaster? probably not. but understand we had seven weeks in which we could have a done a big deal which would have gotten the debt under control, would have caused the economy to -- it would have been a catalyst to have this economy take off, and we blew it. we blew it. >> you know, governor dean, to that point here we are essentially looking over the abyss of the fiscal cliff, and i know you have said in the past let's just go over the cliff and start from scratch. do you still think that's the way to go? >> i do. actually, i hope they never come to a deal because this is the best deficit reduction package the democrats are ever going to get. but let's look at what really is going to happen here. i would be more surprised if they came to a deal in the next five days than i was by the roberts vote on

in other words, i believe we could take up the bill that prevents the fiscal cliff and get it passed in the house. the only thing preventing us from doing that is that the speakers refuse to allow a vote on that. people need to understand that that plan would provide tax relief to 100% of american families on their first $250,000 of income and for folks above that level, they would be paying a little more on the amount of their income above $250,000. that was the bipartisan senate plan. we should have a vote on a plan like that here in the house. >> congressman, last hour i spoke with a woman her name was karen duct. she lives just outside your district. she could lose her unemployment benefits this weekend if no one comes through with a deal that can be sign ed by the president. here's what she said to you and the rest of washington. >> i would ask them to please come together and make a decision, a decision is needed. put all the personalities aside and step up and make a decision. it's not that difficult to make a decision to make sure that millions of americans have food to put o

this is one of the problems that faces the fiscal cliff deal. a filibuster could arise. you and jessica were talking about that. the hope for any deal before january 1st is that somehow minority leader mitch mcconnell could convince his troops, convince the republicans not to block it with a filibuster. each individual senator makes up their own mind, each senator has the right to stage a filibuster. so that's not something he can control entirely. a bigger issue, though, i have to edadmit, when you look at senator mcconnell and why he's so important right now is that he needs to bring some republicans on board this deal for a couple reasons. first, they need those republican votes to get anything through the senate. and then second of all, speaker boehner needs some cover, he needs some way to convince republicans in the house that they should pass this deal. conservatives are putting pressure on all sides and republicans in the house want to be to say conservativings in the senate supported this. i can too for the good of the country even though i don't like it. these
